Korineum Golf Course in North Cyprus

A place where quality and prestige meets... The Korineum Golf Course... You can get to the Korineum Golf Course which is north of Kyrenia toward Esentepe in 10 minutes by cart.

The course takes its name from the old name of Girne Korineum. The Korineum Golf Course is set in an area of striking natural beauty, and has been designed in such a way that it improves and protects this area of natural beauty even further. A stunning green golf course, with the Mediterranean below, and our favourite Northern sea... The Five Fingers rising above... although a little misty... planned and designed to bring these beauties all together, while protecting the beauty of natural environment, and not sacrificing a singletree. You know they say the Mediterranean means olives...and atlas pistachio (gitlemit)... and myrtle... and thyme... well, this place has it all, and in their old and mature states. And not forgetting the lakes, you smell the rich fragrances of the fresh Mediterranean as you follow the little white ball... even if the misty Five Finger Mountains make you fell a little melancholic at this magnificent course where you share the quality and prestige of your friends, underthe shadows of the centuries-old pine trees, and in your own country, you are captured by the charms of golf.

In 1991, one of our renowned businessmen, Gunay Qerkez, went on a visit to Finland to see what opportunities there were in golf, his aim was to bring this sport, which in Europe was one of the most popular sports and was not played during the winter months because of the bad weather, to North Cyprus. This in reality, in North CYprus, which is considered a tourist heaven, was going to bring a very important diversity to tourism. Today the statistics show that 6.5 million people play golf around the world, and if we consider that these people spend their holidays on golf courses, Gunay Qerkez was doing the right thing.

In 2004, Dr Gunay Cerkez decided to complete the construction of a golf course by himself; he had made great progress in only two-and-a-half years. Swedish designer Ernie took to designing the golf course, and fervently explains his success and plans. He says it's a miracle. A course like this, in a climate like this! The 18 holed course is at international standard level, and is able to host international competitions and has (Par 72) characteristics. Together with the 18 holes, for beginners there are three instructive holes. On the training course known as the 'Driving range' there are a total of 34 striking areas.

There is a sea-water purification system that supplies 1,500 square metresofwatera day. The purified water is drinkable and the quality conforms to WHO standards. With an automatic irrigation system, the course is watered regularly. No expense has been spared, and the best quality of turf available in the world, paspalm see-shore which requires less water than other turf, has been used.

The Korineuin Golf Course, constructed over 800 donums, is 6,232 in length. There is a club and an academy building within the grounds of the golf course. Michael, who the pro (professional) of the course, says the building is currently one of its kind in Europe. It is big enough to accommodate 500 people, and is suitable for large concerts. Inside there is a restaurant and bar there are also gymnasium halls, conference salons and what you might expect to see in luxury hotels, Spas as well as luxury health and beauty centres. There also are endless terraces with magnificent mountain and sea views.

Many tour operators have included golf as part of their 2007 programmes. Anyway, it is impossible for someone who visits, not to fall in love with the surroundings, anyone who does, is sure to want to come back over and over again.

In recent years there has been a real boom in Golf tourism. There are still 6.5 million golfers around the world that is equal to one per cent of the worlds' population. There was an increase of 8.4 per cent in World Golf Tourism between 1997 and 2001. The number of golf players is rapidly increasing every year. The tourism agencies, who have realised this, apart from the classical tourism investments they usually make, are now also now investing in building golf courses. The obsession most golf players have is to play on different courses, especially when choosing a place for a holiday, they tend to prefer countries that have golf courses.

Cyprus is an ideal country for Golf Tourism. You can play golf all year round. It makes a wonderful choice for many golfers, with its combination of sun, sea and cultural tourism. You can spent a day full of golf in the Mediterranean climate taking in the natural beauty of our surroundings. We are proud, and haven't been able to stop boasting about the impressively beautiful course we have in our country.
